3D Tree Mapping - Rethinking the DBH Tape (#AREA 06)

This talk explores how we can use off-the-shelf digital cameras and free software to produce dimensionally correct 3D models of real trees in our urban forest. The technologies have the potential to change the way we measure trees and undertake urban forest inventories.  With the support of the TREE FUND’s John Z. Duling Grant, we present results of our research into using cutting edge technologies to measure the DBH, height, crown depth, and crown spread of trees. Most importantly, we also measure above-ground woody volume – a challenge for which no cheap, simple solution has previously existed. Can we throw away our DBH tapes and clinometers yet? We'll answer this question and address some important methodological challenges.
